2007 Colgate/ADHA
Community Outreach Award
The 2007 Colgate/ADHA Community
Outreach Award is being awarded to the South Florida
Dental Hygiene Association for its efforts in
reaching out to a community of children between the
ages of 3-14 who have very limited access to basic
oral health care. Our members recorded a baseline
plaque control indices, provided self-care
instructions, and donated oral health tools,
including Colgate toothpaste and brushes. A second
plaque control index for each child, along with
self-care reinforcement showed a 51% improvement in
the children's oral hygiene. We demonstrated that
oral hygiene education and homecare interventions
can make a significant difference in the health of
the oral cavity.
This project took place at HIS
HOUSE CHILDRENS HOME; a group of homes for children
of low socioeconomic means who are in transition
between foster care and adoption, and are without
preventive dental care for long periods of time.
